In retail trading, technical patterns are viewed as valid at any time of day. In institutional trading, time is superior to price. An Order Block tested at 2:00 PM during the Sydney afternoon has almost zero institutional backing. That exact same Order Block tested at 8:30 AM EST during the New York Open Kill Zone has multi-billion-dollar algorithmic order flow behind it. Mastering session timing ensures you only trade when the real market makers are active.
Why Time Matters More Than Price
Interbank pricing algorithms do not operate uniformly 24 hours a day. They execute high-velocity re-pricing routines during specific time corridors known as Kill Zones. Outside of these windows, markets drift in low-liquidity noise where spreads widen and patterns produce false signals.
By confining your trading exclusively to the Kill Zones, you eliminate over-trading, reduce drawdown, and align your entries with institutional volume surges.
The Asian Range Consolidation
The Asian Range runs from 19:00 to 00:00 EST (7:00 PM to Midnight New York time). Because London and New York banks are closed, price typically consolidates in a tight 20-35 pip range.
The objective during the Asian session is NEVER to trade the range breakout. Your objective is to mark the exact Asian High and Asian Low. These two levels form the primary liquidity targets for the London Open manipulation.
1. ASIAN RANGE: • 19:00 - 00:00 EST • Objective: Mark High & Low. No execution. 2. LONDON OPEN KILL ZONE (LOKZ): • 02:00 - 05:00 EST (07:00 - 10:00 GMT) • Characteristics: Peak volatility in EUR, GBP, CHF pairs. Judas swing occurs here. • Sets High/Low of the Day in 70% of daily cycles. 3. NEW YORK OPEN KILL ZONE (NYKZ): • 07:00 - 10:00 EST (12:00 - 15:00 GMT) • Characteristics: Highest global liquidity. US economic news releases (08:30 EST). • Offers trend continuation or New York reversal setups. 4. LONDON CLOSE KILL ZONE: • 10:00 - 12:00 EST (15:00 - 17:00 GMT) • Characteristics: European desks squaring positions. Counter-trend retracements.
London Open Kill Zone (LOKZ)
The London Open Kill Zone (02:00 - 05:00 EST) is the engine room of the forex market. London handles over 38% of global foreign exchange turnover. When London opens, algorithms execute stop runs against the Asian Range.
If the daily bias is bullish, London will sweep the Asian Low, tap a Discount POI, and reverse into a furious rally. This sweep and reversal establishes the Low of the Day.
New York Open Kill Zone (NYKZ)
The New York Open Kill Zone (07:00 - 10:00 EST) represents the overlap between London and New York. At 08:30 EST, high-impact economic indicators (CPI, NFP, GDP, Retail Sales) inject massive institutional volatility.
NYKZ setups typically present two variations: a continuation of the London trend after a minor pullback to an FVG, or a New York Reversal when London has already delivered price into a major Higher Timeframe daily POI.
London Close & Macro Windows
Between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM EST, London trading desks close their books for the day. This creates profit-taking flows that often produce a 20-40 pip retracement against the daily trend before price settles into afternoon consolidation.
Additionally, ICT identifies precision 20-minute Algorithmic Macro Windows (e.g. 08:50 - 09:10 EST, 09:50 - 10:10 EST, 10:50 - 11:10 EST). During these specific micro-windows, algorithms systematically seek out nearby Fair Value Gaps to balance liquidity before the next hourly candle.
Golden Rule: If a setup forms outside a Kill Zone, ignore it. If a setup forms inside a Kill Zone at a confirmed Higher Timeframe POI, execute with full confidence.
